Drafted with the first overall pick in 1976, Griffin spent three seasons with the Baltimore Colts. He served primarily as a backup and rotational back, accumulating steady but unspectacular numbers. During these years, he learned to navigate a professional offense while protecting his durability for a longer career.
St. Louis Cardinals Era (1979–1982)
Traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, Griffin saw more goal-line and short-yardage assignments. He gradually expanded his role from strictly backup to a situational workhorse, contributing in critical down environments.
