Current Status of Toys R Us in California
As of 2025, there are no official Toys R Us company-operated retail stores open in California. The chain exited bankruptcy in 2021 and launched a smaller-format Toys R Us Express concept, but these limited pop-ups and partnerships have not resulted in permanent locations in the state. Shoppers in California can purchase Toys R Us brand items at select national retailers, online at Toysrus.com where available, and at independent toy stores.
Timeline of Exit and Attempted Return
Original Chapter 11 Exit and Retail Divestiture
Toys R Us filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in September 2017 and agreed to sell its U.S. toy and infant business to Fairfax Financial and GCP Private Equity. The transaction included divesting hundreds of leased stores, which led to the closure of most California locations by mid-2018.
2019 Pop-Up and Express Experiments
After the 2021 exit from bankruptcy, Toys R Us tested smaller formats, including pop-ups and a Toys R Us Express prototype in New Jersey. These experiments did not expand to California, and no permanent company-operated stores were established in the state.
2024–2025 Partnership and E-Commerce Updates
In 2024, Toys R Us announced an expanded partnership with another retailer for holiday pop-up shops, but these remained absent from California. The primary shopping method remains the official website, where inventory and shipping eligibility vary by region.
