He was selected by the Cleveland Browns with the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. College Career and Heisman Win
2012 Breakout Season
In 2012, Manziel engineered a dramatic turnaround for Texas A&M, transforming a struggling program into a national contender fueled by his improvisational playmaking ability. His capacity to extend plays with his legs and deliver under pressure made him a dual-threat phenomenon. The Heisman Trophy he claimed at the end of the season solidified his place in college football lore as the first freshman recipient of the award.
- Won the Heisman Trophy in 2012 as a freshman.
- Led Texas A&M to a 10–2 record and a Big 12 Championship.
- Set multiple school freshman records for passing and total offense.
NFL Draft and Cleveland Browns Tenure
Draft and Early Promise
Heading into the 2014 NFL Draft, Manziel was widely considered one of the top prospects, drawing comparisons to mobile quarterbacks who could create with their feet and arm. The Cleveland Browns selected him with the 22nd overall pick, signaling a franchise-building effort around his unique skill set. Initial preseason glimpses generated optimism about his ability to fit an up-tempo system and make plays outside the structure of traditional pocket passing.
On-Field Performance in the NFL
Manziel’s NFL stint was brief and inconsistent. He appeared in only a handful of games across two seasons, compiling modest statistics and showing flashes of the dynamism that made him exciting in college. His limitations against structured NFL defenses, combined with struggles with accuracy and decision-making under pressure, led the Browns to move on from him. He spent time with the Baltimore Ravens and Montreal Alouettes but never regained an NFL roster spot.

Off-Field Issues and Legal Challenges
2014–2016 Incidents
Off the field, Manziel’s public image suffered as videos surfaced showing him engaging in behavior that conflicted with NFL expectations. Incidents involving alcohol, altercations, and allegations of domestic violence drew intense media scrutiny. In 2016, an arrest for domestic violence was documented, though the charge was ultimately dismissed. These events shifted conversations about him from his athletic promise to questions about judgment and reliability.
Subsequent Legal Matters
Later legal issues, including a 2017 misdemeanor charge related to a confrontation with an ex-girlfriend, continued to highlight ongoing struggles with conflict resolution and personal conduct. Court outcomes varied, but the cumulative effect reinforced a narrative of wasted talent and instability. By the late 2010s, his name was more frequently associated with legal headlines than football achievements.
Current Status and Life After Football
Football Retirement and New Directions
By the early 2020s, Manziel had effectively stepped away from professional football. Public appearances and interviews suggested an interest in exploring other avenues, including potential ventures in entertainment and business. However, his efforts to rebuild a public career have been uneven, often overshadowed by his past controversies. He has remained in the public eye more for legal issues and personal struggles than for any new professional endeavors.

As of the most recent available information, Manziel resides in Texas and has made limited attempts to re-enter structured professional settings. He has participated in a small number of independent and alternative football exhibitions, but these have not led to sustained opportunities.
